Our Mission

Our mission is to strengthen the Independent Auto Insurance Agent by working with our Companies, the Department of Insurance, the NC Rate Bureau, and other entities that may affect our future. We want to insure the long-term survival of the Independent Auto Insurance Agent by becoming aligned with those who can affect our industry, creating an Auto Insurance Agency structure that is mutually beneficial to all parties.

About Us

The AIANC was founded in 1988.  The association has a permanent seat on the Board of Governors, and Jeff Butler, past president of the AIANC, was appointed by

Commissioner Jim Long to fill that seat.

In 1991 the AIANC hired a lobbyist and that same year was instrumental in the property damage limits being increased to $25,000 and also in the bill allowing agencies to charge fees.

In 2006, the AIANC was instrumental in gaining approval of Senate Bill 881 which will increase fines for lapsed liability insurance.  The intent is to cut down on uninsured motorist claims by making to penalty for lapsed insurance greater.  The association also believes it may have a long term effect of lowering, or maintaining the current liability rates.  They also believe it could reduce the workload of DMV officers responsible for the removal of license plates from vehicles with lapsed insurance.

In 2006, the association was also instrumental in clarifying and implementing the new "Inexperience Operator Rule", which clearly defines which drivers can and can not be given proof of Foreign Drivers License experience based on the availability of our companies to be able to pull and verify a valid driver record from their country.  Currently, Canada and Puerto Rico are the only exceptions.
